Graduation Requirements

Every student is encouraged to take 40 credits each academic year but must take at least 35 credits. Students are advised to take 5 academic and 2 elective subjects, along with physical education/health.   A typical schedule for a student is as follows:

  • 5 Academic = 25 Credits
  • 2 Electives = 10 Credits
  • Physical Education/Health =   5 Credits
  • Total     = 40 Credits

Students who receive the approval of their counselor and desire to carry 6 academics would have a schedule as follows:

  • 6 Academic   = 30 Credits
  • 1 Elective = 5 Credits
  • Physical Education/Health =   5 Credits
  • Total   = 40 Credits

Annual student promotion to the next grade requires a given number of earned credits.  Students must accumulate:

  • 25 credits to advance to grade 10
  • 60 credits to advance to grade 11
  • 100 credits to advance to grade 12
  • 140 credits to graduate
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL CREDITS FROM OTHER SCHOOL DISTRICTS BE ACCEPTED TOWARD GRADUATION UNLESS PRIOR APPROVAL IS REQUESTED IN WRITING BY THE PARENTS AND/OR GUARDIANS AND APPROVED BY THE PRINCIPAL.
 
In order to graduate, students must pass the statewide 11 th grade New Jersey High School Proficiency Assessment.   For any student who does not meet the State and Local School District examination standards for graduation, the local Board of Education when appropriate shall provide additional remedial and/or supplementary instruction specifically directed towards mastery of those proficiencies identified as necessary for the awarding of a diploma which may include, but not be limited to, an extended school year, extended school day, or additional school years.
 
The successful completion of a program of study in grades nine through twelve shall include the following state and local school district requirements:
  1. At least 20 credits in language arts literacy (English 9-12)
  2. At least 15 credits in mathematics
  3. At least 15 credits in science
  4. At least 15 credits in social studies: World History, United States History 1 & 2
  5. At least 4 credits in health, safety, and physical education during each year of enrollment
  6. At least 5 credits in visual and performing arts *
  7. At least 5 credits in world language
  8. At least 5 credits in career education and consumer, family and Life Skills or vocational- technical education
* Practical arts courses may be used to fulfill this requirement.
 
Any student having an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) developed by the Child Study Team must successfully complete the program to qualify for a secondary school diploma.
